Well, the team of DMC2 ***ed everything up. From battle system to storyline. Obviously they used that cliche of the macho silent guy who kills and gets the job done without cheer ups. They thought they came up with something great.. Crap..
Anyway the following games did justice and I can say that there is only one hope for the story, considering that DMC2 is the final part. Something terrible must happen in DMC5 or DMC6, (I don't know how many they' re gonna be, particularly with Dante starring, as I suppose Nero will succeed him in the series) to explain the attitude of Dante in DMC2. Something like the death of Trish for example, or Lady, or both. That would be cool if it's used in the plots of the following games, and for the general story.
Capcom didn't have a plan for the story of 4 games at once of course, but as the developers of the 2nd game ***ed it up, Capcom must try to come up with plots for the next games that will fit DMC2 into the story.
A remake would be interesting. I wouldn't change the story. Only the gaming experience, which was a dissapointment (Square square square, no combos, boring as hell). Better graphics and the battle mechanics of DMC4 and DMC3, would make this game as good as the others and a fitting end to the series.

... And she cradles me down into sleep
Still I miss her so and for more I weep
And she gives me death yet i'm alive
raving eternally, on her I thrive..
... And she buries me down far too deep
Yet six-feet high and gives me bliss to keep
and she abuses me yet I abide
She's in demand, my hunger I cannot hide..
Her name's Jez..
