Well, I don't want to consider DMC2 as a part of the story, because the development team surely didn't know what they were doing with the game.

Anyway, going by the assumption that the events of DMC2 actually happen after the 4th game, the answer is quite simple. Dante is a gloomy bad ass because of all the sad things he has gone through in his life. The death of Eva, the supposed death of Vergil, all the evil he has been fighting against. If my life would be like that, I would probably also end up blocking my feelings.

I cherish my mom more than anything and anyone. If anyone killed her, be it a human or a demon, I would go f*cking nuts. No way would I then find all the fighting exciting.

Think about it... would being chased by demons, having to take part in continuous battles and watching all those you love be killed really that thrilling...?

Dante is extremely powerful and agile, and since he has seen a lot of demons and is half one himself, he is more used to fighting them which results in him teasing them "Oh you poor thing!" "Didnt your mother ever teach you how to use a door?" This would seem that he finds it all thrilling. But he is also a grumpy b*stard in some parts, because thats when the memories have caught up. Like his reaction when he lost Vergil and when he saw Trish (um...after she took the glasses off...-_-' Dantes getting slow in his old age ^_^)

There is no such thing as an easy life, but thats no reason to try and make it even harder than it is

Actually, I believe the main reason why Dante acts like a cocky smart ass and makes fun of the demons he fights against, is to bury his real feelings. That's his way of escaping his emotions, so that they don't take over him on a crucial moment.

I think that Dante's ice cool attitude is his channeling of his older brother, cos he misses 'im. But his gloomyness comes from losing all of his family, and he's alone in the world. I'd be that way too, definiteley.

if i lost all my family i would be devastaed but i would get over it and be strong and use that anger to power me to find and kill the murderer  but  i guess i would be sad  but i would hate to cry i hate crying it makes me feel weak and defenseless

You really have a lot to learn about life, Shadow. Never, ever forget crying. Being able to cry is one of the greatest strengths you can have. I lost my ability to cry some years ago, but thanks to a certain person I got it back. I'm a lucky one.

I think its just the demon in him. I mean, if you think about it, most demons are evil (Sparda withstanding), so it only makes sence that he would be a little cold.
