Well, Close. Mundus likely turned him into Nelo Angelo. But you're right, he probably lost because he didn't have his father's power.

It might be that vergil just got to Mundus, and Mundus made a deal with him, to give him more power, rather than actually having a fight.  But I think it's more likely that Mundus whupped him and took control of him.

Impossible...the first part I mean

Sorry to be so blunt, but its simply not the way it worked out.

first, Vergil wanted to prove himself by beating Mundus, so he'd fight to the death, you know him. Plus, he would never bow to anyone or bend to their wishes. He's simply too arrogant for that. He'd rather get the power himself. Also, Mundus wouldn't NEED to make a deal with hiim if he could just simply defeat him and gain control over him.

Finally, in DMC1 we see Nelo struggling as if he were fighting some memory within. My guess is after seeing the amulet he started to fight Mundus' control. The battle between Mundus' hold over him and the small part of Vergil remaining was apparent. However, I'm sure that Mundus strengthened his hold over him from then on. Perhaps until Nelo's final act of revealing his face. He may have hoped that would spur dante into defeating him and releasing him from Mundus' control.....maybe even to death...

Yeah man.  Well I think the V man will play a part in DMC4, I think it would be crazy if he doesn't even show up.  But I am doubting whether he will be a playable character / costume... It would be cool if they just let you unlock a Vergil costume at least.  I have written an article about a proposed Vergil game, about what he did after arriving in the demon world, before battling Mundus:

Gilver i think u r right about vergil not subjecting himself 2 anyone,at least we all noticed that when arkham convinced him to defeat dante and take the amulet from him.Mind u,all that crap about defeating dante and taking the amulet waz not vergil's idea;it waz arkham's.And we all saw how he bruatly stabbed arkham;that proves that he is never influenced by anyone and he is not willing to share power with anyone else apart from dante:"why dante,why dont u want the power of our father sparda.Father,i dont have a father.I just dont like,that is all".    
Now back to the hypothesis;in dmc2 when the portal to the demon world got open,and it waz apparent that mundus wanted to return,lucia voluntered to go and stop mundus and  dante tricked her by flipping a two headed coin and went instead.If u all observed the situation u will all ask ur selves the following questions:
  [1]why was dante desperate to go to demon world and face mundus knowing that once    he entered he might never return?and
  [2]why is that after defeating mundus he went deeper into the demon world with his power bike?
My guess to no 1 question is that dante has no interest whatsoever in defeating mundus,he would have preferred mundus coming out to the open to confront him than him going to the underworld to face him.Dante was after something else.
My no 2 answer is that he was going to the depths of hell to face no other person than vergil.
Till now dante is still stuck in the demon world,that is why capcom decided to go back to dante's root in dmc3 and dmc4.Remember the time when lucia was in dante's shop and while flipping the coin realised dante tricked her into entering the demon world,she heard the sound of a bike outside and she went out to investigate;that is how dmc 2 ends.We dont know who the person was,some think it was dante and i say that is impossible.I mean it took sparda years before he could leave the demon world,do u guys think it would have taken dante a few mins to escape hell? Anyway i think the person on that bike was lady.
