Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

Hey just wanted to know if anyone played Shin Megami...i know DMC 2 Dante is in it? Is it a good RPG or what? I was thinking of getting it but mind you i've never played an RPG before..i find them boring.

Also you think Dante and Trish in Viewtiful Joe has any revelance in the DMC world? (with Trish and Dante being a couple) UGH!

Never played Shin Megami. As for Viewtiful Joe, I certainly hope it has no relevance, Trish and Dante as a couple is just too creepy for me.
This just keeps getting better and better!

It is safe to say that the events in both games have no bearing on the main story. VJ does answer some things but its over all hilarity obviously puts it out of the running. Dante and Trish are certainly partners after the events of DMC1. Lovers is not likely, though Dante may be a freak, I just don't DMC being the game to tackle the issue of an Oedipus conflict. Though Trish merely looks like his mother and is a very different being so a Oedipus complex doesn’t quite fit.

SMT is more boring than Hell, pun intended. I bought it thinking it would be awesome, but I only palyed it for an hour or so before I gave up. Do not get it, under any circumstances.

Sythe, the oedipus complex is still applicable because Dante obviously projects his ideal of his mother on to Trish, and apparently blames Sparda for many things in his life. True, he hasn't actually killed Sparda, but there is evidence that he has disowned him.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

I respectfully beg to differ on Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne! :) Buy it and play it, it is WONDERFUL! Hell, it's my second favorite game of all time!!

If you liked any of the Final Fantasy series (FFVII in particular), or almost any action-based RPG, then you will just love it. The entire game is drawn in beautiful cell-shaded anime-styled art work worthy of animation itself and the music is solemn and haunting. (PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS AN ACTION-BASED RPG LIKE FINAL FANTASY VII AND NOT A PURELY ACTION-ADVENTURE GAME LIKE DMC ITSELF!)

The game begins with what is quite literally, the end of the world. You watch as the Earth of the humans dies in a fiery Apocalypse, leaving behind nothing but a dead world of lost ghosts, angry spirits... and demons. Demons in this game are either good, neutral or evil creatures that you will encounter in random battles or in talking situations outside of times of fighting. This is where SMT: Nocturne becomes unlike any other RPG, other than perhaps oddly enough, Pokemon.

Demons encountered in random battles can be spoken to and with a bit of persuasion (this is dependant upon many, many factors; you, your character's current beliefs, who your other party members are, the demon's beliefs, type, sex, age and even the phase of the moon can play a part in this!) allowed to join your party and fight on your side!

Once in your party, demons can be combined with other demons by 'breeding' (sometimes sacrifices under a full moon are required) in order to make even more powerful or hard to find demons. Again SMT's demon breeding setup is a bit like a dark version of Pokemon. The demons themselves are incredibly detailed, and each one possesses a personality; every demon's likes or dislikes will become well known to you during their time as your loyal friend or partner.

The demons represent literally almost every human culture and religion around the world. Where else can you have the Satanic goat-headed Baphomet operating in the same party as Pazuzu, the four-winged lion headed god of the ancient Persians, Yurlungur, the Rainbow Serpent of the Australian Aborigines, Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, Shikome, the Japanese Death-Witch of Hell, and Michael, the Archangel of the Judeo-Christian mythos? This doesn't cover even one-twentieth of the characters in this game. I personally have all four of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in my group. Anyone who loves mythological creatures will love this game based on that alone!

Dark, evil and complex, SMT: Nocturne is truly one of the hidden gems of the video game world and there is a good reason why it has such a cult following. It is sure to offend some people with its portrayal of demons as 'good' characters, sexual themes, use of pentacles (pentagrams) and other images and ideas that have been borrowed from many religions, including Satanism. God does not figure prominently in this very unique game, but is alluded to by many demons. This is not a game to be taken lightly. It is a serious game that will kick you very hard, but I promise that it will keep you coming back for more. I have beat it and have personally logged well over 96 hours in one game alone. In my opinion, it is a travesty that this wonderful game has been quietly concealed amongst the thick piles of crap that clogs the arteries of the EB's and GameStops of this country. Anyways, try it and see what I am talking about.

Oh, and because I'm a nice chick, I'm gonna pass along some screenshots and other pictures from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for you to enjoy. :) For those who are wondering, YES, Dante from DMC2 is in this game, so see below. He does have a very good story in this game, and he is a demon that you can convince to join your if you have allowed your character to develop along a good-aligned path. If you are evil, or have sided with the Devil, he will tell you in not so many words to roll it up real tight and shove it. And even though I have tried it because I just had to know... NO, you cannot 'breed' Dante to another demon. ^_'o (Did that just change my alignment from good to evil? ::grin::)

Anyways, as I have said many times before; check this wonderfully unique game out. You will NOT regret it!

    Lotsa love, - SPhoenix

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

As said before if you like final fantesy then you'll love this.
One thing I enjoyed was being able to customize your party  so that if you see an enemy you like you have a chance of putting them in your party (excluding bosses). So I think that is a major part of the game that makes it so great.
Although it can get anoying sometimes because puzzles are challaging and some enemies are brutely strong.
It's a good game if you've got a lot of time on your hands and I personly haven't  finished  it but  am up to the last part and have taken a rest from it, but if you can get though the thick of it it becomes quite enjoyable.

The problem is the battles are way too frequent and I have no idea what to do. I really just want to know the story, not fight through monotonous encounters. I'll probably just buy the strategy guide.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

Yeah me too. RPG's get boring real quick when you get to the end and you have to beef up your characters for the final boss that you are not ready for.But for some reason i still enjoy them.

i haven't tried this game yet. it lookes interesting.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

Dante is a boss, and later ona unlockable character for your party.

I went to EB to get it a few days ago, not surprisingly the crap EB here didn't have it... or ZOE... or ZOE2... or anything worth buying...

Anywho, RPGs are a acquired taste. Either you love them or you usually just don't like them at all. I for one really enjoy RPGs, I enjoy having gameplay based on strategy sometimes and I esspiaclly like the stories. I don't think any game series has touched RPGs in terms of story telling yet.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

If I wanted gameplay based on strategy, I'd buy a strategy game (which I also don't play because they're boring). The reason RPGs excel in their storytelling so much is that they have to cut back on gameplay to make room. Hence the monotonous leveling up, side quests etc. If I wanted a good story, I'd read a book (which I find more exciting than RPGs), you see what I'm saying?

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

Yes, but you make it sound as though no one in there right mind would enjoy RPGs or choose them over other genres. People enjoy RPGs for the gameplay, with games like DMC some poeple seem to forget there are other types of games, and there are other types of gamers that do enjoy RPG gameplay acctually better than DMC's style. RPGs gameplay isn't boring, you can find it boring, and games aren't made RPGs because they couldn't fit "good" gameplay because of a long story. RPGs are made RPGs because there is a market for them, long before Xenosaga and Final Fantay XII there were RPGs like the orgional FF on NES which had no more story than Megaman, but it was still an RPG and still a successful game. A game cannot be boring, but a gamer can feel a game is boring.

Another thing I'd like to add, allot of people seem to forget, not all RPGs are turn-based games like Final Fantasy, games like Omnimusha and Zelda are RPGs.

RPG gameplay cannot just boardly be called boring, as in everything, it's a matter of the gamer's opinion.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

OK RPGs aren't boring, they just induce boredom in the person who plays them. Also, Onimusha and Zelda are not RPGs. Zelda is action adventure and Onimusha is action in general.

Keep telling yourself whatever you want, I'm sure they'll develop some drug or therapy to help all of you sick RPGers. It is a sickness, after all.

Nope, Zelda is an RPG and is listed as such.

Again, RPGs aren't simply turn-based, there are other types. Ask any Zelda fan what genre game LoZ is, they'll probably say RPG.

Although you seem to be right about Onimusha.

Just so you know, I am not an "RPGer", I own 20 games for my PS2 right now (PS games inculded), 4 of which are RPGs.

Re: Anyone played Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne of Viewtiful Joe?

Look, it doesn't matter what those sites say, Zelda is not an RPG, or not anymore than other games.

In RPGs you level up, fight random battles, and recruit people into your team. You do none of that in Zelda. Thus, it is not an RPG, anymore than LOK is an RPG.
